Dad left soon after his shower, wearing his nicest t-shirt and jeans that didnât have that many holes. The man was never going to be a suit-and-tie man, but just once Iâd like to see him wear a clean button-down and maybe even a tie. I couldnât remember seeing him like that, ever. Not even at a wedding or my graduation.
Since I had some time to kill before I left, and plenty of zucchini, I went ahead and mixed up some more zucchini bread for Ingrid and Athena. Just because. It wasnât because of my crush. I was just being neighborly. So what if they didnât live close enough to be considered neighbors. We were still within the same town limits. That counted.
The bread was still piping hot, so I brought the bags with me and threw the tray onto the passenger seat and hoped that it wouldnât burn my upholstery on the way over.
My car was filled with the irresistible smell of the bread so, by the time I got to Ingridâs, I was ready to shove the entire loaf into my mouth at once like a snake.
The pan had cooled enough that I didnât burn my hands when I picked it up and carried it to the front door, along with my bag full of sheet and foot masks and a few other scrubs and random skincare things. I sometimes got my nails done, but I didnât own any decent polish, so Iâd left that at home. Plus, I figured with a toddler it was a bad idea anyway.
âYou did not,â Ingrid said when she opened the door and I held out the tray of bread.
âCanât stop, wonât stop,â I said. âCareful, itâs still pretty warm.â
âMy mouth is watering already,â Ingrid said, inhaling deeply.
âKissa, Kissa!â Athena said, running over to greet me in the way Iâd become accustomed to. This time I leaned down so she could throw her little arms around my neck. Her hair was damp and smelled like honey from her shampoo.
âHey, Athena.â
âYou bring me bread?â she asked, looking up at the tray her mom was carrying to the kitchen.
âI did. But I think we need to have dinner first, okay?â I said and she nodded.
âDinner first, dessert after,â she said.
âThatâs right.â I stood up and she took my hand in hers, leading me to the kitchen.
âYou ready for dinner, my warrior princess?â Ingrid asked Athena.
âYes, yes!â Athena said, raising her hands over her head.
To help out, I got my own plate and served myself while Ingrid handled Athena.
âCan you grab her some ranch?â Ingrid asked and I pulled it from the fridge and handed it off to her as Athena bounced in her seat.
âYou canât bounce and eat, my love,â Ingrid said, pouring a little puddle of ranch on Athenaâs plate.
âI can get yours,â I offered, seeing that she had her hands full already.
âThanks,â Athena said, shooting me a grateful smile.
I made up the burger to Ingridâs specifications and added a heaping pile of sweet potato fries and carried everything to the small table.
